When Ethan started his business in 1985, he was determined to create quality woodworking that his clients would enjoy for years. Almost a quarter century later, he’s still making beautiful, functional pieces that stand the test of time. Ethan Horwitz Cabinetmaker produces fine custom residential cabinetry and millwork for the discriminating client.
Ethan started his woodworking life as a general carpenter. One day he saw Fine Woodworking magazine, and a whole new world opened up for him. He set about learning his craft, attracted by the high precision required to produce truly exceptional work. After being exposed to the art world, design, and related crafts, his tastes and capabilities began to mature. This allowed him to approach new projects with a broader perspective and renewed creativity.
In 1985 Ethan started his own shop to have complete artistic control over his work. He has developed knowledge of woods and how best to use them. For example, when building a piece where grain and figure are important, Ethan is careful about where the wood is purchased and how it is integrated into the project, going so far as to handpick each piece of wood.
One of Ethan’s influences is the Arts and Crafts movement that posits the idea of melding utilitarian design with artistic expression. Like practitioners of that movement, Ethan has a great love of things created by human hands rather than mass-manufactured by machine. He invites those who share this sensibility to appoint their home with custom woodwork with the style and sophistication possible only when created by the hands of expert craftsmen. |
